Staircases
In order to provide easy access on and off the additional floor, staircases are usually constructed from steel with hand railing on each side. However, it is important that you pay close attention to staircase regulations, which are:
- Part K Compliant Staircase
A900 mm wide tread with knee and top rail is required. Open stair treads made from chequer plate. The riser cannot exceed 190mm.
- Part M Compliant Staircase
A 1200 mm wide fully enclosed tread with a top rail is required. A mid-landing is installed after a maximum of 11 treads.
- Public Access Staircase
A 1200 mm Part M Compliant staircase with infill to handrail to leave no more than a 100mm gap.
Additionally, flooring solutions can be used by a wide range of businesses such as warehouses and offices; you may also consider installing other forms of staircase ancillary products. For example, you could install an ambulant staircase for disabled access, or perhaps installing a lift in order to comply with building regulations.
Handrailing
Every mezzanine structure must be supplied with adequate protection to any exposed edges. However, safety isn't the only consideration; you should also think about the aesthetics. Fortunately, P&D Projects can offer a wide range of styles to suit both your requirements and budget.
Our standard system for industrial mezzanine flooring includes hand and knee rails, with a kick-plate at the floor level. However, if you want something more aesthetically pleasing, perhaps a stainless steel handrail with glass infill will better suit your business' decor?
Pallet Gates
When loading pallets on and off an additional floor, it's very important to install safety features, such as a pallet gate or a sliding hand rail.
Installing a pallet gate ensures that there is always a physical barrier between the operative and the exposed edge of the floor. For extra convenience, they can be installed retrospectively if the situation requires.
However, if a pallet gate would be unsuitable for your business activities, for example a business where pallet movements are infrequent, installing a sliding hand rail might be a more appropriate solution. In addition to being cheaper than pallet gates, this alternative can also be installed retrospectively if needed.
